Joel Epstein, an associate professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine here at Mizzou has been rewarded a $1 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to create a video game about the dangers of drug abuse.

The game will be developed in four years. The first two will be devoted to developing the game and testing it among St. Louis 4th and 5th graders. Two versions will be made, one centered among young males and the other one centered around young females.

This is a pretty cool idea to me. Seems like a good way to educate kids about drugs and their affects. I know I’d play the game. Hopefully it turns out well. Either way it gets Mizzou’s name out to an even broader range of prospective students. Nothing wrong with that. You can read the whole story here at the Post Dispatch. I want to hear your thoughts on this also.

Beard Team USA

6 04 2009

btusalogowotext1As you all know I love beards. Having a beard is awesome. It keeps me warm in the winter and keeps me looking good. But I just found the one thing that trumps having a beard and that my friends is the World Beard and Mustache Championships. I know right? Crazy. But it is totally true. The U.S team even has a website located here. This is seriously the single most amazing thing I have ever seen. I can’t believe something this awesome even exists. You have to check out the website and read up on the competition. They even have a store where you can buy sweet polos and they have a blog

I’m fairly certain I just found what destiny in my life awaits me. The World Beard and Mustache Championship is where I am destined to compete. My life would be complete after winning it all. I should probably start training so I can look like this guy.

Represent Mizzou Via Faith

Thought everyone should see this sign from a Methodist Church in the St. Louis area. I love seeing everyone get into the mood for Mizzou sports, in particular Mizzou Basketball.

An interesting note, I actually know the Pastor of this church. Kinda odd to see this photo show up on RockMNation and to know the man responsible for the sign. Anyway, if any of you come across any interesting photos like these feel free to post them.

Starting a New Era For Nuts and Bolts

31 03 2009

Thanks to my lovely brother, I’ve decided to start blogging about Mizzou and the ins and outs of my daily routine and crazy things that I see and partake in during my days as a student at Mizzou. This definitely isn’t the best time to be deciding on what to blog about because school is almost over but I’ll definitely make up for lost time come next semester. For now keep an eye out for new posts and if you see something funny at school, let me know and I’ll give it a post.

Oh, and ideas for names for the blog are appreciated.

For now embrace our Elite 8 Appearance.

Missouri Top 10

11 03 2009

I’m going to compile a list of the top 10 greatest places to go/to do in Missouri. I’ve already compiled some lists of my own. But I want to know what you guys think should be included. So answer the poll or comment on what you think should be listed on the top ten. And give me a reason behind your choice. Anything from parks, to sports teams, to random roads count. Let me hear your thoughts.

Senator Claire McCaskill and Senator Kit Bond have been the ranked the 8th oddest couple among U.S Senators according to  a Capitol Hill magazine. Not only that but Missouri is ranked as the 15th most centrist state in all of Congress.

It doesn’t surprise me that the two senators are so far apart, but what does surprise me is how middle of the road McCaskill votes. She is the 46th most liberal and 52nd most conservative senator in Congress. That truly does surprise me.  I am not surprised at Kit Bonds ranking however. He is the 13th most conservative and 84th most liberal.

This report is very interesting and I would recommend finding the information for your home state and for the politicians you have/considered voting for.

President Harry S. Truman

25 02 2009

Harry Truman Looking Rather Quaint

Harry Truman Looking Rather Quaint

President Truman is the first and only president that calls Missouri home. He hails from Lamar, Missouri and is the oldest sibling in his family.  Truman is most known (in my humble opinion) for making the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Truman became president after the death of FDR and was elected again after he finished serving FDR’s term. He served almost two full terms after taking office just months after FDR was re-elected.

I’ve personally been to Truman’s library north of Kansas City, Missouri and I was very impressed with the library itself and the vast amounts of information located in the library. Truman is a very interesting president to study and to learn about because of the way he took office and the fact that he didn’t want to become the vice president. FDR and other democratic party leaders didn’t even consider truman until many other choices didn’t pan out. I highly advise at least the skimming of the provided links. Truman isn’t your normal boring president. He made a lot of history and not only just history, he made lots of interesting history that I’m sure you will enjoy.

Leave your comments of your favorite thing about Truman. Anything counts. Even putting down the fact that you dig his glasses is acceptable with me. But just barely acceptable.  Until Next time.

Your Thoughts Needed!!!

2 02 2009

To all you out there in cyber wonderland I need your help! I’ve been rather lazy lately on the blogs and one of the reasons is I don’t know what you cyberbrats want to hear about. What are some of the things you wanna know about Missouri? History? People? Attractions? Nature? What do you want to know the most? Email me or comment below your ideas. I need them ASAP. Thanks all.

Oh, and Perry Salyer is writing up a blog all about the ice storm that hit my hometown, Poplar Bluff. Should be some good photos and stories all about good ol’ southeast Missouri.

What’s To Come

16 01 2009

Sorry for the tardiness in blogs. I’ve been lazy and I just moved back into the dorms so I haven’t gotten around to doing anything on the blog. Plus their hasn’t been a lot of news as of late.

But this saturday the Cardinals Caravan is going to be at the Mizzou/Iowa State game. So you can go check that out if your a Cards fan or if you’re like me and there’s nothing else to do except lounge around until classes start up again.

On to other news. I’m going to start up a weekly/bi-weekly guest blog from someone that is from out of state. I should have a few lined up as this blog is being posted so hopefully next week or the week after I can get that up. I also want to do a weekly celebrity that was born in Missouri or went to school in Missouri. So I’ll start that up after classes get going and what not.

Other than that I’ll try and keep you posted on all things Missouri. Good luck with classes. Well, those of you that have classes.

Nixon Takes Office

12 01 2009

Nixon Taking The Oath of Office.

Nixon Taking The Oath of Office.

Jay Nixon, a Democrat, who beat Republican Kenny Hulshof this past November took office today. He faces an all republican general assembly in a tough economic crisis. Which should force some good ol’ Bipartisanship among the governor and the GA.  Good luck Governor. Here’s a link to  The St. Louis Post Dispatch detailing the inauguration.
